{"id":240,"date":"2025-10-22T03:31:59","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T03:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oraiaphysio.co.nz\/wp_oraia\/?page_id=240"},"modified":"2025-10-22T22:23:59","modified_gmt":"2025-10-22T22:23:59","slug":"biomechanics-analysis-and-exercise-therapy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oraiaphysio.co.nz\/wp_oraia\/index.php\/services\/biomechanics-analysis-and-exercise-therapy\/","title":{"rendered":"Biomechanics Analysis and Exercise Therapy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>What Is Biomechanics?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biomechanics<\/strong> means <em>the way your body moves and how forces act on it.<\/em><br>It looks at how your muscles, joints, and bones work together when you walk, run, sit, lift, or do any activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your movement is not well balanced \u2014 for example, if one muscle is weak, a joint is stiff, or your posture is off \u2014 your body starts to <strong>compensate<\/strong>, which can lead to <strong>pain, tightness, or injury<\/strong> over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83d\udca1<strong> Why It Matters<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By analysing your movement, a physiotherapist can find out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Which muscles are overworking or underworking<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which joints are too stiff or too mobile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How your posture or walking pattern affects your pain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What exercises or corrections can help your body move more efficiently<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\ud83e\udde0<strong> In Simple Terms<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biomechanics is about finding the <em>cause<\/em> of your pain \u2014 not just treating the symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When your body moves in the right way, muscles share the work evenly, joints stay protected, and movements feel smoother and easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Example<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your knee hurts when you walk, the problem might not be in your knee \u2014 it could come from your <strong>hip alignment<\/strong>, <strong>weak gluteal muscles<\/strong>, or <strong>foot mechanics<\/strong>.<br>Biomechanical assessment helps us trace that chain and fix the real issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Pain is often caused by muscle imbalances and wear and tear in malaligned joints. Through detailed analysis of your posture and dynamic gait pattern, it is possible to identify problematic muscles and joints. By stretching shortened muscles and strengthening weakened ones, we can help realign the joints into a biomechanically advantageous position. This minimizes wear and tear, enhances joint function, and allows movement with greater efficiency and less effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A common example of this is <em>runner\u2019s knee<\/em>. Pain typically appears along the outer (lateral) side of the knee after prolonged running. This condition often affects amateur runners who rarely stretch. The usual cause is a tight <strong>iliotibial band (ITB)<\/strong> combined with weakness in the <strong>vastus medialis oblique (VMO)<\/strong>\u2014the inner part of the quadriceps muscle. This imbalance causes the kneecap (patella) to track laterally, leading to friction and gradual wear on the outer surface of the patella, resulting in lateral knee pain.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"295\" height=\"246\" src=\"https:\/\/oraiaphysio.co.nz\/wp_oraia\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/WhatsApp-\u5716\u72472025-10-1715.26.06_4b934c4a.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-241\" style=\"width:501px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to treatment is to stretch the ITB and strengthen the VMO. These exercises must be specific and well-targeted. When the ITB is extremely tight\u2014feeling almost like a rubber band\u2014it can be further released using therapeutic modalities such as ultrasound, dry needling, or Kinesio taping.
